Sky Sports and Endemol Shine had conceptualised a new joint venture for the Sky Sports brand, featuring key presenters and pundits including Natalie Sawyer, Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher. At Nimbletank i was briefed to create a new game for Android, iOS mobile & tablet that delivered against the initial idea.
The game has attracted a growing and increasingly significant user base, thanks in part to Apple featuring the game as Best New Game. The App reached no. 1 in both Sports and Trivia categories on the Apple App Store. The product roadmap is truly exciting and more enhancements and iterations are coming as we head into the 2015/2016 season.
The challenge was simple. Create a question-based game, which focuses on football. Mobile gaming platforms were a key element as they added extra functionally. The game had to work across facebook, iOS, android and tablet. Designing a product, which worked seamless across all platforms, was the main challenge.
With an existing game mechanic we worked with Sky and Endemol to outline the game strategy to focus more on user engagement and returning users. From here we created a low level game prototype to test the mechanics. After refining the game mechanic’s we then turned our attention to the content and how easy it should be to add change and modify content for sky. Motion and sound was a key part of the product since this was a game. We focused on a animation style and theme based around football. The sounds are based on chants, whistle and other football sounds.
Impact We created Sky Sports Soccer Quiz, a global quiz where you can challenge friends, win trophies and top the table by answering football questions against the clock. We created a back-end to support advanced analytics and game engine optimisation. This also supports new content creation like lifelines and question packs. We launched the BETA mobile product in four countries to help iterate the product ahead of the global rollout in 20.
